SOP for Operation of Diesel Generator

  • OBJECTIVE:
    • This SOP is describing the Operation of Diesel Generator.
  • SCOPE:
    • This procedure is applicable to the Operation of Diesel Generator set Capacity 1000 KVA, located at the Utility block of Engineering and Maintenance department .
  • RESPONSIBILITY:
    • Technician/Operator is responsible to follow the laid down procedure in sequential manner.
    • Officer/Executive is responsible to monitor closely and ensure that laid down procedures are followed.
    • Engineering – Head or designee shall be responsible for reviewing the SOP and for ensuring proper execution of preventive maintenance.
SOP of the Operation of Diesel Generator.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY:
    • Engineering – Head shall be accountable for proper implementation of the SOP of the Operation of Diesel Generator.
  • DEFINITIONS:
    • General procedure for operating the diesel generator, always consult the manufacturer’s manual and any site-specific protocols for precise instructions.
  • PROCEDURE for Operation of Diesel Generator:
    • Pre-start Checks:
      • Check and ensure that coolant level is up to the ‘Full’ mark, If level is low then open the radiator cap and top up with Coolant additive to the desired level.
      • Check the engine oil level of the genset with the help of the dipstick provided. The oil mark should be at ‘H’ mark on the dipstick. If oil level is below the ‘H’ mark then top up with 15w40 oil.
      • Check the battery voltage on the alternator panel. It should be in-between 26 to 28 volt DC.
  • For Starting procedure for DG in Manual Mode: Operation of Diesel Generator
    • Ensure that Red color emergency push button is must be in release condition.
    • Ensure that the Rotary switch installed at synchronization panel must be in manual mode during manual operation of DG.
    • Turn the start switch in the remote panel to ‘ON’ position and wait till the Electronic Control Panel completes the self-check of the entire engine Parameters. Then turn the switch to ‘START’ position to crank the engine and keep the switch engaged till the engine starts.
    • Run the engine in ‘idle’ mode for 2 minutes.  Check the rpm of the engine on AMF panel it should be 1000±30. Turn the switch from ‘idle’ mode to ‘run’ mode. During ‘run’ mode rpm of the engine should be 1500±30.
    • Check the voltage on the voltmeter provided on the AMF panel. It should indicate 415 volts ±5.
    • Check the frequency on the frequency meter provided on the AMF panel. It should indicate 50 Hz ±0.5.
    • Press the ‘Close’ button of the ACB on the AMF panel to load the genset. The ‘red’ indicator lamp on the panel for ‘ACB ON’ should glow.
    • Check the engine lube oil pressure on the AMF panel during operation. It should be in-between 5.5 kg/cm2 to 7.0 kg/cm².
    • Check the coolant temperature on the AMF panel. It should not exceed 85°C.
    • Check the amperes drawn on the ammeter. It should not exceed 600 amperes on ‘R’, ‘Y’ and ‘B’ phases.
    • Monitor the operation of the genset and record all the parameters on hourly basis in the      operating logbook as per format no. SOP/EN/XXXYYY.
    • The parameters may include RPM, lubricating oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltage, current, frequency, KWH, KW, and PF etc.
  • For stopping procedure for DG Set in Manual Mode for the Operation of Diesel Generator
    •     Check the final readings of DG parameters and note down in log book.
    •     By pressing the ‘Open’ button on synchronization panel, release the DG incomer breaker.
    • Turn the DG key on ‘OFF’ position from AMF panel. Ensure DG is ready to start in auto     mode.
  • For starting procedure for  DG set in AUTO Mode:
    •    After power failure engine will start automatically after 10 seconds.
    •    Check the fuel level in the diesel service tank.
    •    Check the coolant level in the radiator.
    • Engine will pick up and will develop voltage.
    •    Check voltages between R-Y, Y-B and B-R. It should be 415 ± 5 volts.
    •    Check frequency of supply. It should be 50 ± 0.5 Hz.
    •    DG breaker will close automatically.
    •   When DG load reach 65% of DG full load, Second DG will start and synchronized
    •    automatically.
    •   Use touch screen to scroll the readings.
    •   The parameters may include RPM, lubricating oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltage, current,    frequency, KWH, KW, and PF etc.
    •    Monitor the operation of the genset and record all the parameters on hourly basis in the operating log book as per format no. SOP/EN/017-F01.
  • For stopping DG set in AUTO Mode in the Operation of Diesel Generator
    •    DG set verifies the HPSEB supply is resumed.
    •    Check the final readings of DG parameters and note down in log book.
    •    The DG incomer, Bus coupler 1, will open automatically.
    •     Both Engines will stop automatically after 180 sec.
    •  Note: DG warm up cycle on daily basis for 5 to 10 minutes and note down the detail as per format no. SOP/EN/XXXYYY.
