SOP For Identification of Stainless Steel EN-64

The purpose of this (Standard Operating Procedure) SOP For Identification of Stainless Steel is to provide guidelines for the accurate identification of stainless steel materials used in various applications within the organization/Department. The identification process is essential for ensuring proper handling, maintenance, and compatibility with specific environments or processes.

SOP For Identification of Stainless Steel

• OBJECTIVE:
  • To lay down the procedure for identification of Stainless Steel (SS – 302, SS – 304 and SS 316).

• SCOPE:
  • This SOP is applicable for testing of SS material (SS – 302, SS – 304 and SS 316)

• RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Engineering department shall be responsible for Identification of SS material.
  • Engineering – Head or designee shall be responsible for compliance of the procedure.

• ACCOUNTABILITY:
  • Engineering – Head shall be accountable for compliance of the procedure.

• DEFINITIONS:
  • Nil
• PROCEDURE:
  • Clean the metal surface with emery paper which is to be tested.
  • Put a drop of electrolyte solution of the Molybdenum test kit on clean metal surface which is to be tested.
  • Switch on the detector and touch the metal tip of the detector on metal surface and carbon point in electrolyte.
  • Pass the current for not more than 4 seconds.
  • If the red colour appears and remain for long time then it shall be concluded that materials of the part being tested is SS 316.
  • If the red colour appears and disappears immediately then it shall be concluded that the material of the part being tested is SS 304.
  • If the black colour appears and is stable for more than 2 seconds then it shall be concluded that material of construction of the part being tested is SS 302.
  • For low carbon steel (SS-316L), supplier certificate shall be verified.
  • Record observation as per SS material identification record as per Format no. SOP/EN/XXXYYY
