The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure SOP For Preventive Maintenance of Hot Air Oven, Laboratory oven, Vacuum Oven, Muffle Furnace, Bio Safety Cabinet and fuming hood is to establish guidelines and procedures for the preventive maintenance of Hot Air Ovens, Laboratory Ovens, Vacuum Ovens, Muffle Furnaces, Biosafety Cabinets, and Fuming Hoods. SOP For Preventive Maintenance of Hot Air Oven, Laboratory oven, Vacuum Oven, Muffle Furnace, Bio Safety Cabinet and fuming hood

  • OBJECTIVE:
    • To lay down the procedure for preventive maintenance of the hot air oven, laboratory oven, vacuum oven, muffle furnace, and bio-safety cabinet installed in QC department.
  • SCOPE:
    • This SOP is applicable to preventive maintenance of hot air oven, laboratory oven, vacuum oven, muffle furnace and bio safety cabinet installed in QC Department .
  • RESPONSIBILITY:
    • Technician/ Operator shall be responsible for proper execution of preventive maintenance as per SOP.
    • Engineering – The head shall be responsible for reviewing the SOP and for ensuring proper execution of preventive maintenance.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY:
    • Engineering – The head shall be accountable for the proper implementation of the SOP.
  • DEFINITIONS:
    • Nil
  • PROCEDURE:
    • Preventive maintenance shall be executed as per SOP No.: SOP/EN/XXXYYY – Execution of Preventive Maintenance.
    • Ensure that the spare parts are available at the time of preventive maintenance.
  • Preventive Maintenance – Mechanical

Vacuum Oven

  • Clean the chamber drain strainer
    • Remove guides, shelves and loose plates & clean the chamber internally.
    • The cleaning frequency of chamber shall be monthly.
  • Checking of Door
    • Check the condition of door gaskets for any damage or insufficient lubrication. If found damaged replace the gasket by following procedure.
    • Remove the door gasket from the groove.
    • Check the door hinges and gasket conditions.
    • Clean the groove & gasket with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) thoroughly.
    • Put the gasket in the groove by pushing it slowly.         
    • Conduct chamber for vacuum leak test.  
    • Frequency schedule monthly.
  • Checking the installed instruments
    • Ensure that the installed instruments are calibrated.
    • Check that end connections of instruments are tight; if required tighten the same.
    • The checking of instruments frequency shall be done at every six month.
  • Checking of heater coil
    • Check and clean the heater coil and fins with gentle air pressure or with help of air blower.
    • Check the coil connections and ensure that there should not be any burnt connections.
    • The cleaning frequency shall be performed at every three months.
  • Clean and check the vacuum connections
    • Check the vacuum pump connections and vacuum pump valve
    • If required tight the end connections.
    • The cleaning frequency shall be performed at every month.

Fuming Hood:

Fume hood 003
  • Check the fuming hood ducting and structure
    • Check the fuming hood ducting and structure for any leakages; if found rectify the same.
    • Check the gas connection line / ducting and ensure that there is no leakage.
    • Check the filters for any damage; blocking; if required remove and replace the same.
    • Checking shall be done at every six month.
  • Checking of blowers
    • Check the blower motor for any abnormal sounds.
    • Lubrication of blower’s motor bearings shall be carried out as per supplier’s recommendation of after every three months.
  • Checking of switches
    • Check the switches for wiring connection if required tighten the same.
    • Check the switches for proper functioning.
    • Checking frequency shall be done at every three months.

Hot Air Oven  / Laboratory Oven and Muffle Furnace

  • Checking of Door
    • Check the condition of door gaskets for any damage OR insufficient lubrication. If found damaged replace the gasket by the following the procedure.
    • Remove the door gasket from the groove.
    • Check the door hinges and gasket conditions.
    • Clean the Groove & Gasket with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) thoroughly.
    • Put the Gasket in the Groove by pushing it slowly.       
    • Conduct chamber for vacuum leak test.  
    • Frequency schedule monthly.
  • Checking of heater coil

  • Checking of fans and fan motor
    • Check the fan motor for any abnormal sounds.
    • Lubrication of motor bearings shall be performed at every three months.
  • Checking of insulation
    • Check the insulation for intactness; if required re-insulates the un-insulated surface.
    • Checking shall be done at every six monthly.

Bio Safety Cabinet

  • Check the door hinges.
  • Check the bio safety cabinet for proper functioning.
  • Check the blower motor.
  • Check the LAF.
  • Checking shall be done at every six monthly.

  • Preventive Maintenance – Electrical
  • Checking of terminals and wiring
    • Ensure that the power supply to the machine is switched OFF.
    • Visually check all the power and control wiring and terminals in the electrical panel and control elements mounted on the machine for any loose connection and damage.
    • Check and ensure by using the screwdriver that all the wires are properly tightened at the distribution terminals inside the electrical panel and on the terminals of all the control elements.
    • Checking shall be done on six monthly basis.
  • Checking and maintenance of contactors
    • Switch OFF the Electrical supply to the Machine.
    • Remove all the power and control wires from the contactor terminals.
    • Remove the contactor from the panel and visually check all the contacts for the signs of pitting and deposition of carbon on the contacts.
    • Clean the contacts, terminals Replace the contacts if found damaged / welded.
    • Put back the contactor in the panel and re-terminate all the power and control wires properly to their original locations.
    • Checking of contactors shall be done on six monthly basis.
  • Checking of motor
    • Check the insulation resistance of motor winding with the help of megger.
    • Check the phase continuity and winding continuity of motor with the help of tong tester.
    • Physically check the motor terminal box and terminal connections.
    • Check the voltage drawn by motor with the help of multimeter
    • Check the current drawn by motor with the help of tong tester.
    • Physically check the direction of rotation; it should be as per recommended direction.
    • Checking shall be done at every six month.
  • Checking of earth connection
    • Check earthing wire and thimble for any damage. If observed any replace the same.
    • Tighten the earth connection with appropriate tool.
    • Checking shall be done on six monthly basis.
  • Checking of Temperature Controller
    • Check the display
    • Check the wiring contacts, if required tight the same.
    • Checking shall be done after every six month
  • Post Preventive Maintenance – Check List
    • Record the Preventive Maintenance details as per the Format No.: SOP/EN/XXXYYY“Preventive Maintenance Checklist & Record for Hot Air Oven, Laboratory oven, Vacuum Oven, Muffle Furnace and Bio safety cabinet.
    • Whenever any modifications and major works are carried out to the equipment, the same shall be mentioned in the equipment history card as per the SOP. SOP/EN/XXXYYY.
    • Connect the equipment main power supply and start the equipment.
    • Ensure that the equipments are running smoothly, without any abnormality.
    • If any abnormality is observed in the above, same will be attended in co-ordination with User department Head.
