  • SCOPE:
    • This SOP is applicable to the cleaning and sanitization of underground raw water, underground soft water and soft water storage tank after UF.
  • RESPONSIBILITY:
    • Technician/ Operator of Engineering Department shall be responsible for proper execution of operation as per SOP f Cleaning and Sanitization of Raw Water and Soft Water Storage Tank.
    • Engineering – Head shall be responsible for reviewing the SOP and for ensuring proper execution as per SOP for Cleaning and Sanitization of Raw Water and Soft Water Storage Tank.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY:
    • Head of department- Engineering & Maintenance shall be accountable for the SOP of Cleaning and Sanitization of Raw Water and Soft Water Storage Tank.
  • DEFINITIONS:
    • The Cleaning and Sanitization of Raw Water and Soft Water Storage Tank refers to a structured and systematic set of steps aimed at maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and hygiene of raw water and soft water storage tanks. This procedure ensures that the tanks are free from contaminants, deposits, and potential sources of bacterial growth, thereby safeguarding the quality of stored water and complying with health and safety standards.
water System
  • Procedure for Cleaning and Sanitization of Raw Water and Soft Water Storage Tank
  • Cleaning of underground/ overhead raw water storage tank ( RCC/ HDP):
    • Put status board indicating that tank is “Under Cleaning” as per Format no.SOP/EN/XXXYYY at the start time of cleaning.
    • Switch off the bore well pump, if running.
    • Drain off water completely from the tank by using pump.
    • Wear cap, nose mask and gloves.
    • Take 1 kg of bleaching powder.
    • Put the bleaching powder in 10 Liter water in a bucket.
    • Insert a cleaned ladder into the tank.
    • Enter into the tank with help of ladder, in presence of the supervisor.
    • Mop the inner surface of the tank with the bleaching powder solution and leave it for 1 hour.
    • Come out from tank and go again inside for further cleaning.
    • Scrub the inner surface thoroughly with a hard nylon brush or scrubber.
    • Collect the residue in plastic bucket and remove from the tank.
    • Do wet mopping on the walls and floor of tank with 0.2% v/v Sodium Hypochlorite.
    • Finally mop the walls and floor with bore well water.
    • Empty the tank by using pump.
    • Come out of the tank and remove the ladder.
    • Fill the tank with bore well water up to one third of the tank level.
    • Wash the tank thoroughly and pump it out.
    • Similarly, rinse the tank twice with fresh water and pump out.
    • Remove the status board “Under Cleaning”.
    • Affix the “Cleaned” label on the tank as per Format no.SOP/EN/XXXYYY.
    • Start the pump and collect fresh water into the tank.
    • Put the tank into operation by opening the entire tank outlet valve.
    • Cleaning of raw water storage tank shall be carried out and detail shall be recorded as per format no. Format No. SOP/EN/XXXYYY.
    • Frequency: Once in 6 month (± 15 days).
    • After cleaning of the tank inform QC Department for water analysis.
