SOP for Operation of Steam Boiler

  • OBJECTIVE:
    • To lay down the Procedure for Operation of Steam Boiler installed in utility area.
  • SCOPE:
    • This SOP is applicable to Operation of Steam Boiler installed in utility area .
  • RESPONSIBILITY:
    • Technician/ Operator of Engineering Department shall be responsible for proper execution of operation as per SOP for Operation of Steam Boiler.
    • Engineering – Head shall be responsible for reviewing the SOP and for ensuring proper execution as per SOP for the Operation of Steam Boiler.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY:
    • Engineering – Head shall be accountable for proper implementation of the SOP for Operation of Steam Boiler.
  • DEFINITIONS:
    • Nil
Compressed Air Qualification
  • PROCEDURE:
  • Pre Start up procedure:
    • Pre-checkup to start the boiler.
    • Check the water level in the feed water tank through level gauge.
    • Check the Fuel level in the Diesel tank through level gauge.
    • Check the HSD supply to the burner assembly.
    • Check the pH of the feed water it should be between 8.5 to 9.5.
    • Check the air vent valve of boiler, it should be open. Check Main steam valve it should be closed.
    • Ensure that burner modulation switch is in “off” position.
    • Check the water level in the gauge glass it should not be less than minimum level required.
    • Open the main valves of HSD/ Furnace oil  & feed water.
  • Start Up procedure
    • Switch ON the main panel of boiler.
    • Switch the control supply to “on” mode.
    • Switch ON the selected feed Water pump.
    • Switch ON the burner switch.
    • Switch ON the firing switch.
    • After the burner switch ON, within 15 seconds firing will start inside the boiler.
    • When steam starts comes from the air vent valve, close the air vent valve.
    • When steam pressure reaches 5.0 kg/cm2 open the main steam valve.
    • Check that all the steam traps are working properly.
    • Check that boiler mounted safety is working properly like mowbray low safety in every shift.
    • Put “on” the modulation switch.
    • Ensure that blow down is effective.
    • After startup of boiler, check the characteristic of the flame for proper functioning
  • To Shut down the Boiler.
    • Switch off the burner modulation switch.
    • Turn off main fire/burner switch.
    • When steam pressure reaches 3 kg/Cm2 close the main steam valve while slightly opening air vent valve.
    • Open the air vent valve.
    • Feed water pump should be switched “On” to make up the water.
    • When steam pressure comes at 0 kg/cm2– switch off the feed water pump.
    • Switch Off the main Panel of boiler.
    • Leave the air vent valve open.
    • Record the detail of operation after every 02 hrs from start of the boiler as per Format No. SOP/EN/XXXYYY.
    • Record the detail of total running hrs, steam flow meter reading, steam consumption, HSD dip should be taken after every 24 hrs.
